The “Squat Girls” were the precursor to the “Fertility Figures.” In this suite Rowe wanted to create monolithic figures over 9 feet tall. Instead of sculpting a figure fully standing Rowe decided to address the female form in her most natural of states the squat. From primitive times, the woman drew strength from the squatting position. She would give birth and carry her child using the center of her body. As in ancient tribal artifacts, the female as a fertility and primal figure was celebrated and adored. In essence Rowe draws from the central power of the woman and brings her to life.
